Preparing Your Gutters for an Indiana Winter

Winter in Central Indiana isn't kind to gutters. Wet snow loads, ice dams during January thaws, and the constant freeze-thaw cycle can pull sections off the fascia and crack sealant overnight. A little fall prep goes a long way.

Clear every leaf and seedpod

A clogged gutter freezes into a solid block of ice. That's how sections get torn off in February. Late November or early December — after the last leaves are down — is the right time to clean.

Flush every downspout

Stand a hose at the top of each downspout and confirm water exits cleanly at the bottom. Crushed elbows, clogs at the transition, or buried underground extensions are all common in Indianapolis.

Check pitch toward the outlets

Water should move toward the downspouts, not pool in the middle of a run. If you see standing water after flushing, the gutter has lost pitch — usually from settled hangers.

Inspect every miter

Cracked sealant at the inside and outside corners is the most common winter leak source. If you see hairline cracks, those joints need to be cleaned and re-sealed before they freeze open.

Address attic insulation if ice dams are a problem

Recurring ice dams aren't a gutter problem — they're an insulation and ventilation problem. Warm air escaping into the attic melts snow on the upper roof, which refreezes at the cold eaves. Fix that and the gutter survives the winter.
